Why Creative Writing Matters

I recently read How Creativity Rules the World by Maria Brito and have been reflecting on why creativity in the classroom is so important. In one section of the book, Brito reminds reader how creativity helps us connects the dots, or piece the puzzle together in our lives.

Being creative is not only an expressive outlet, but is also a manner in mixing intuition and rationality as Brito puts it. I like to think of creativity as a way to balance our heart and our head, and I hope that as educators we see the need to infuse more creativity in our classrooms. Here are so more reasons why creativity belongs in every classroom:

Builds Strong Communicators

Through storytelling, students learn to express their thoughts clearly and confidently. They develop essential skills in vocabulary, sentence structure, and tone—skills that translate across all subjects.

Sparks Critical Thinking

Creating characters, solving plot problems, and building narratives challenges students to think deeply, make decisions, and analyze outcomes. It’s imagination with purpose.

Grows Emotional Intelligence

Writing fiction allows students to explore their own feelings and understand others. They build empathy and self-awareness by stepping into new perspectives.

Nurtures Originality & Innovation

Creative writing encourages originality and experimentation—skills that fuel innovation far beyond the classroom.

Strengthens Literacy

From spelling and grammar to reading comprehension, writing creatively supports the foundational skills students need to succeed in school and life.

Amplifies Student Voice

When students write and share their stories, they realize their voice matters. Completing a story—no matter how short—is empowering and builds confidence.

Meets Learning Standards

Creative writing reinforces key language arts objectives and integrates seamlessly with Common Core and state standards.

Inspires Lifelong Learners

Whether it’s a short story, poem, or journal entry, creative writing nurtures a love of reading, thinking, and learning that lasts a lifetime.
